When Robert proposed to her she refused, due to health reasons, but when she saw she had been sitting on the bouquet of violets she decided to put them in water. If the flowers revived, Elizabeth would marry. The rest is history. Her greatest work, SONNETS FROM THE PORTUGUESE (1850), is a sequence of love sonnets addressed to her husband. Robert was also an English poet noted for his mastery of dramatic monologue. Long unsuccessful, he was financially dependent upon his family until he was well into adulthood. He later became a great Victorian poet.
