The Spencer Hotel has earned the historical landmark distinction. Renovations of The Spencer began in 1997 and were completed in 2002 for the historic landmark distinction. The Spencer is approaching an exciting 100th anniversary year and is excited to now offer pampering spa treatments by licensed massage therapists and partnering technicians. As the Grande Dame ages it continues to improve its physical ambiance while providing guests with all the modern amenities and conveniences that our 21st century requires.
All rooms were decorated by local artists to depict the lives of or scenes from the works of famous authors. In many cases, hand-painted murals grace the walls, floors and ceilings. Guests will also find faux finishes and yards of English lace in addition to custom- made drapes, dust ruffles and lampshades. The parlor and dining room have Strauss crystal, oriental carpets and beautiful Victorian antiques. An elevator services all four floors. Four floors of porches grace the front of the hotel appointed with Victorian sofas, chairs and rockers overlooking the famous amphitheater.
Part of our spa experience includes our custom-made sauna, monogrammed bath robes in each room, massage, manicures, pedicures, facials, and soon to offer health and wellness weeks featuring artists, musicians, and wellness professionals. Plans are in the making for our relaxation room to be equipped with a wall-sized waterfall, and lunch to be served in the relaxation room after a massage or time spent in our new sauna . Guests may also have a massage in the room by candlelight, and enjoy a relaxing whirlpool tub or jacuzzi.
The Spencer offers many cozy areas that are just perfect for playing a board game, curling up with a good book, or engaging in an interesting discussion with others. During warm weather the front porches provide a vantage point to take in the essence of Chautauqua. Musical CDs in each room have been chosen to set the feeling of being part of the author's world, in additon to a restored library of their books in each guest room. As do many hotels all over the country, we have a cookie jar, but not just any cookie jar... our cookie jar is crystal, and our assortment of home-baked cookies are representative of the author's theme (We even have wilbur the pig!) so for a bedtime snack each guest can choose a cookie that goes with their room. A movie theater screen (90 x 50) and DVD projector in our Monet Parlor will feature each authors' works, in addition to a variety of healthy snacks and sparkling bottled water.
